Kirby's Return to Dream Land - First Impressions

Check yesterday's post for my impressions of Super Mario 3D Land. For now, we're moving from 3D Land to Dream Land.

While Daisy and I got to try out a few different games yesterday, this is the one that stuck out the most to me. The title refers to Kirby coming home to Dream Land and returning to the classical style of Kirby 2D platforming after the departure with Epic Yarn. This game is a lot like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which is definitely one of my favorite games of this generation. On top of that, my few complaints about that game seem to actually be addressed here with Return to Dream Land. The co-op feature is very simple: additional players can simply drop in and out on the fly, even during a level. This is a great feature for what will undoubtedly become a fun game at parties. Better yet, the characters are not all functionally identical like Mario, Luigi and the Toads. Player one is Pink Kirby, of course. However, additional players can choose to play as another-colored Kirby or as Meta Knight, King Dedede or a Waddle Dee, each with their own move sets! Kirby himself, aside from his copy abilities, has "super" copy abilities that wipe out the whole screen. He can also inhale his teammates and shoot them out as a huge projectile.

Aside from these features, Return to Dream Land seems to be classic old-school sidescrolling with bright, fun graphics and cool power-ups. I know people are probably looking forward to Skyward Sword more than anything else this holiday season, but I'm already looking forward to more nights filled with old-school 2D action. This game should not be overlooked. Enjoy the trailer, character art and screenshots below!
